Hashtags

Hashtag Strategy Basics

What hashtags can reasonably do, what they cannot, and how to tag honestly.

Hashtags are categorisation, not magic

A hashtag tells a platform and its users what a post is about. That is genuinely useful, and it is the whole of what a hashtag reliably does. Treating tags as a growth lever independent of content quality leads to disappointment.

Relevance beats reach

A broad tag puts your post in front of more people, most of whom did not want it. A specific tag puts it in front of fewer people who did. For most accounts the second is more valuable, because engagement comes from relevance.

Be sceptical of numbers

Any tool claiming precise reach, engagement or popularity figures for a hashtag should be treated carefully — those numbers are rarely verifiable and often invented. Tagzy deliberately shows none, because a fabricated number is worse than no number.

The platform's own search is the honest source: look at the top posts and judge whether you belong there.

Consistency compounds

Using a small, consistent set over months does more for discoverability than chasing a new set every week. Consistency also means your own archive stays searchable.
